HI All,
Here is the stumper of the day over here in Sacramento.
Mom has a one month old premie. She had been smoking a full pack of
cigarrettes per day. Milk supply very low, between 6-8oz per day, no more
than that. LC told mom that the nicotine level was effecting her milk
supply (by keeping it low) and that to up the supply she needed to reduce
the amount of nicotine in her system. Within a week mom cut back from a
pack a day to no more than 12 (how many are in a pack?) per day and only
smoking them half-way. So far no increase in milk supply. Mom is
double-pumping appropriately.
Questions from LC:
How long before noticeable increase in milk supply?
Will mom ever get a full supply?

My question:
Does the amount of nicotine really affect the amount of milk a mom will
produce? Had not heard of this one.

All info helpful, and any thing else anyone can tell me about nicotine in
relation to supply and effects on baby would be helpful. Thankfully most of
the moms I work with either don't smoke or quit while they pregnant. The
ones I have worked with who smoked did not have a problem with their milk
supply.

Thanks!
Jay
