fact, all our nurses carry them in the OB area.

I think what the nurses are using isn't a cell phone but a wireless phone.  The difference is that the wireless doesn't connect anywhere outside the hospital and is not a breach of confidentiality concern.  If you look closely, I'll bet you will see what looks like samll TV antennas spaced around on the ceiling.  Before it was decreed that cell phones were OK for visitors to use in the general areas, patients and visitors would complain that staff were using them, why couldn't they.  We had to explain the difference several times a day!

Just goes to show that things aren't always what they seem on the surface ( a lesson that applies to our dealings with families as well).
