<<We don't know why the milk supply has been diminished>>

what makes her think supply has diminished on that side? the temporary
decrease that seems to occur premenstrually and for the first couple of
days of the menstrual cycle? baby isn't gaining? can't get anything
with the pump? did baby recently start sleeping through the night? is
baby getting bottles and refusing to nurse? I frequently see moms who
use a few bottles a week (and/or paci's) suddenly complaining that
their babies won't nurse when mom resumes menstrual cycles. baby
won't put up with the decrease in supply when food is readily available
from another source that also meets their sucking needs.

i also commonly am in contact with moms who simply aren't interested in
nursing more freuqently than their set number of times per day even in
the face of significant evidence indicating that it would "x" (increase
supply, get more nutrition to baby etc).

if she will nurse more frequently, I'd pursue herbs if she's comfortable
with that.....and wouldn't encourage pumping if she already doesn't want
to pump. ime, when a mom doesn't want to pump, seeing fairly
ineffective pumping output seems to cement their belief that the supply
is low and that the can't do anything to affect it (ie why bother
nursing right now, i can't even pump anything)....whereas if mom is
comfy with the herbs and will just nurse the baby more, supply will
come up quickly without mom having to see/measure/look at the amount of
milk or lack thereof.

also, we don't typically thing of latch issues with a 6 mos old but i
think it's still a good place to look. many of us give much attention
to latch and positioning while nursing our infants, but as we're nursing
older babies, we and they become less attentive to optimal latch and
positioning. it's worth a try anyway.
