Pat, as a Mum of one of each between two boys as different as chalk and
cheese.
Nicholas BF to 6 months exclusively, (usually 3-4 hourly on the dot) but
began tasting then and gradually decided under his own steam that what the
girls were eating or what was on Dad or Mum's plate were for him. seven to 8
months hed tapered to 1 of 2 BF per day. This tall boy was comfortably
covered by was always light- When he had school checks he was always light
for height age. The same thing happened in the Navy. He is still at 30 years
like his father was at mid 20's until he started putting on the 30's pud!.
Other son, Christopher, exclusively BF(except for sister giving him an Easter
egg at 4 months-that 'he consumed' to the worry of mum) a very tall 23inches
9lb 91/2 oz at birth,he wacked on up to a pound per fortnight and I was told
he would be far to fat. At 8months, not skinny by far, he was walking around
tables etc and by 9months he discovered he could run(to the detriment of
which nipple taken with him) to the window, to sticky beak at traffic and
the BF was forgotten- as well his sisters used to give him their food to
taste and milk from their cup between- Solids 'he consumed', and should have
been huge!! At 12 month and regarded as fat till weighed, 27lbs and standing
33 inches tall, to the detriment of his poor eye brows on tables, that other
toddler's walked under! Than at 18 months 36inches he'd completely slowed
and I was being told he wasn't gaining enough. At school he too was always
behind on Weight /Height ratios, the same in the Navy however he at 29yrs
still out swims and endures all sports and is still underweight but doesn't
look it!!
As You say first look at the parents and their baby photos- before telling
a mum some of the rubbish about being too big or too small for the Guideline
Weight for Age/ Height.
It caused a lot of trauma and argument in our household that was totally
unwarranted.
Warmly, Robyn Aulmann

Dear Elisheva, It is good to ask what parents were like as babies -helps
reassure. I had the opposite problem - hopelessly pudgy babies. It made
me feel good to look at daddy's and my baby pix. Dad was BF and I was bot
fed. Little pudges too! When people asked me what the boys ate
(completely BF) I'd say "rocks" with flaming cheeks. Of course today I'd
make sure they knew that they were totally BF :-) I wasn't so outspoken
then (ha).

Moms of pudgy babies have the opposite problem, everyone wants to put them
on a diet - well if you only nurse!! You should hear some of the
suggestions :-( I guess you can all imagine - everything from weaning to
timing feeds. Boo hiss.) As adults, 2 of my boys are slender (after my dad
and brother) and 1 is stout after dad's family. Interesting to see the
different shapes their BF babies are acquiring. PS: my daughter's and
d-i-l's babies were all pudgy(mostly BF, 2 bot fed) so far about 2/3
slender as pre & teens. Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
