Dear Kathy,

About baby anteaters, I have a old (1958) book entitled "All About Animals
and Their Young", by Robert M. McClung. It is part of the "All About" series
by Random House. According to it (BTW, anteaters are part of the echidnas
family):

"Echidnas, the other egg-laying mammals, are covered with strong sharp
spines and have long tubular snouts. The female broods her eggs in a
maternal pouch which develops on her underside during the breeding season.
She carries the young in this pouch also until they begin to develop spines.
Then she leaves them in a nest in a hollow log while she goes out to forage"

There is also a picture on this page of an anteater, stating, "The echidna
or spiny anteater is covered with sharp spines."

Hope this helps. I originally bought this book at a used book sale because I
am very interested in the way baby kangaroos are mothered and nursed. It has
a wonderful description of that process!
