SIDS is the sudden, unexpected, and unexplained dead of an infant and...the 
thruth is that it is very difficult to differentiate from suffocation. 
Death investigation of a child who dies is now mandatory in the US and I 
believe this could account for at least a piece of the reason why SIDS 
rates decreased in this country and also why they are not decreasing 
further.  No one knows the cause of SIDS although recommendations such 
as "back to basics (breastfeeding, smoking cessation, safe sleep...etc)" 
can help.
