In 1978, Buffey St. Marie, an American Indian and a regular on Sesame Street
at that time, nursed her baby Dakota on the show. They showed Big Bird
looking over her shoulder as she explained to Big Bird that Dakota was
drinking her milk. I will never forget that airing as my 2 year old son who
had not nursed in 2 weeks (baby lead weaning) watched intently and then
leaned over against my breast and said, "nursie." I lifted by blouse and he
placed his mouth on my breast and just looked at me. He had forgotten how to
nurse already. A picture of the scene with Big Bird and Buffey St. Marie
nursing Dakota was later published in La Leche League News. I will always
treasure that memory.

Warmly,
Pat Lindsey, IBCLC
Orlando, FL
(That same son now 26, living at home, announces today he's moving into a
duplex with a friend. Hopefully, he will forget how to move back home as
quickly as he forgot how to nurse. If he doesn't forget, would it be
considered mother lead weaning if I had the locks changed? If he does move
out, Linda we have a bet to settle! We can settle up in Boca.)
