I hope someone can help me with a mom who is having sore nipples.  She has
given me permission to post to the list.  She has a one day old healthy
baby.  Her nipples are inverted, but become erect with stimulation.  Her
breasts are small and firm.  Her areola is also small.

The baby latches on with flanged lips, covering about 1" beyond the
nipple.  The tongue cups the underside of the nipple.  I can see great
areolar compression and hear swallowing.  The problem is that mom is in
severe pain, and her nipples are pinched when the baby comes off.  They are
already getting pink and starting to crack.

Applying pressure to the chin does not help the pain.  The baby didn't like
the nipple shield too well, and the mom didn't notice much of a difference
in pain.

Does she have any other options besides pumping and feeding ebm?  She
really doesn't like that option, but she's in too much pain to breastfeed.
I'm sure that if she continues like this her nipples will be cracked and
bleeding by tonight.
