"We were all agreed that an IBCLC could not *accept the dinner* without
being in violation of the WHO Code....
(A restaurant probably has the right to require that you eat their
fare when you're on their premises ... hence the brown bag tactic won't
work.)"

Actually, (due to my latex allergy and possible anaphylaxis from food
prepared/served with latex gloves) I bring my own food into restaurants for
conferences, etc. all the time. I would flaunt that brown bag at your
table and give the "no free lunch" explanation to others at the dinner. If
someone from the restaurant questions you (someone with no interest in the
ethics issue), simply state that you have special needs (like the need to
preserve your ethics!). You don't need any further explanation. They
can't deny you, and they don't need to know why. For all they know, you
could drop dead; that might hurt business a little ;)
