Hi All,

I got a call from one of my moms today - I am out of town and have no
access to my books.

Mom has a 13 mo old. Mom has been dealing with a condition called (sp?)
lichensclerosis. Apparently this is a condition where the skin of the
vulva grows together due to a lack of or low estrogen levels in this
area of the body. Apparently this also typically happens with older
women not women aged 32. Dr said she believes this is a result of her
breastfeeding as her estrogen levels are low because of breastfeeding.
Mother has had one or two periods in the last 4 months. Dr is NOT
suggesting weaning - she wants mom to continue BF as long as possible.
Mom dealt with this condition many years ago...before ever having
children.

Mom has been using a steroid cream and it is no longer helping the
situation. Dr. has prescribed a 10-14 day course of Estrace estrogen
cream (.1mg estrodial in a non-liquifying base) - once a day treatments.
Mom is concerned about possible milk supply issues. Dr said it
shouldn't do anything or have any effect since it is a topical
cream...(I know this is most likely NOT the case as it will most likely
absorb systemically)

I need thoughts and input please! Thank you very much.

Warmly,

Jaye Simpson, IBCLC, RLC, CIIM
