I ask the mom if it hurts, if it does I ask if she would like me to show
her some "tricks" that will help it to hurt less. If it doesn't hurt
I tell her as good as it is it might be possible to be better and offer
to show her some "tricks" that will help the baby get the more milk.
I never tell her she is doing anything "wrong". I tell her she would
probably have figured these things out in a week or two herself but
maybe by learning the "tricks" early the first weeks will be easier. I
also point out the things she is doing "right" and try to find lots of
them. The "tricks" are the deep, asymetrical latch to show how good it
can feel and/or a demonstration of hand expression the right way (Marmet
technique) versus the wrong way (just compressing the nipple) to show
how a deeper latch yields more milk for baby.
