I sure could use some insight. It seems I am on a roll with regards to some
difficult situations.

As most of you know I am a Leader with League and also a breastfeeding
counsellor. I am not a nurse and have no other medical background. I want to
run this situation by you all to see if there is something more I am not
seeing.

Mom is nursing her four month old baby. She has three other children all of
whom she switched to formula due to colic(her words). She is nearing the end
of her rope and is at a loss of what could be wrong, as am I.

Their nursing relationship has been a struggle from the start. Mom has an
extremly fast letdown. When I first met them the baby would not even
nurse.Baby would cry, fight breast, etc. We worked with it and found some
postions that seemed to be helping, and things appeared to be a bit better.

Mom is following all suggestions from I can think of from the Breastfeeding
Answer Book, and seems to be doing everything right. However things have
taken a turn for the worse over the last week. Baby is nursing every hour,
but only for a few minutes. She then spits the nipple out and cries. No
symptoms of thrush in either MOm or baby. Will not sleep during the day, but
night is O.K. Diaper count is fine as is weight gain.

I have spent several hours now with this pair, and I have never seen a baby
so unhappy. She does not seem to like nursing at all, and fights it all the
way.

Mom does smoke, which I mentioned could be contributing to the fussiness.
Other than smoking I can find nothing that would predispose this infant to
fussiness. She has been to her doctor who thinks her baby just cries alot,
which I guess is true, but not a most understanding response.

Any thoughts would be most welcome. PLEASE!

Jane
