Kathleen B - BF research in Israel very sparse, and we all know
about culture-dependence! Initiation rate is pretty good, but
duration rate pretty discouraging (or does it also look like this
in US?) Here goes: Mansbach et al (1991) - Jerusalem (probably
religious population) - 89.5% initiation, at 3 mos. approx. 70+%;
Heldenberg et al (1993) - Hedera (mostly secular pop.) - 84%
init., 3 mo. 42%; Birenbaum et al (1993) - Tel Aviv area (mixed
pop.) 83% init., 3 mo. 41%. In 1984, Naggan did a study of a
specific subpopulation in Beer Sheva and found only 10% still BF
at 3 mo. In general, my opinion is that "religious" women tend
to have higher init. and duration (Heldenberg et al found this
true for both Jewish and Arab women in their sample). Anybody
agree with me?
By the way, when I wrote in a previous note that "epidural rate
low HERE plus BF rate low...", the HERE was not Israel but Beer
Sheva, which has a largely secular pop. and low SES (and we know
what that does for BF rates!)
YIKES indeed about Hong Kong rate of below 1%. Why & how did that
happen? Anyone know? Scary, like dinosaurs going extinct. Judy
