I am not hospital-based so I don't know what the full implications would be
of instituting 2nd day weight as standard. You know studies would need to be
done, LOL.

I have seen many "inflated" babies. Just a couple weeks ago I had a
4-day-old infant referred to me by a pediatrician who received a panicked call from
a home health nurse who noted the infant, who had a birth weight of 8 pounds
8 ounces, was down 14% from birthweight.

When the parents came in with the baby they looked frightened (of course!)
But, the baby looked terrific. He was alert, was feeding well, was peeing
and pooping appropriately -- everything about him proclaimed "healthy baby." I
weighed him and he was down 14% from birthweight, sure enough. I asked Mom
about her labor -- and she had received many bags of IV fluids over the
course of a 36 hour labor.

I advised them to keep doing what they were doing and sent them home with
nothing more than reassurance. The baby has continued to thrive.

I am not anti-scales but I wish we had more faith in our eyes.
