I agree...We have to still discourage 15/15 per side. I teach moms to look at their baby's response to a feeding and offer the second breast after the baby takes himself off the first breast. Moms tend to want to connect this way but are often taught to look at the clock. I work at a post partum unit where I am always reminding the nurses the importance of affirming a mom and building her confidence.

Subject: Re: 2 sided bf vs. finishing first side first

For me, here in Puerto Rico, this recommendation has been a great hassle/pain in the neck. Instead of recommending "finish the first side first" they are telling the mothers "one side per feeding". Of course, unless you have oversupply, the output is a mother with low milk supply and a baby with poor weight gain. The problem is we have about 800 CLE's who are taught "one side per feeding"...so you can imagine the chaos.

In my experience (remember I do test weighting...Oh nooo, that topic again!!!) most babies need to feed on both sides. And those who have low birth weight, jaundice, or a very medicated birth (sleepy) have to receive both sides more often than once (what happened to "super switching"????).

The recommendation finish the first side first started out because mothers were restricting the breast to certain minutes per side...not letting babies receive enough hind milk to satisfy them. It is a good recommendation, but like everything, it does not apply to all cases.
