Tina, this doesn't fully answer your question, but it will give you a start
on the nutritional value of breastfeeding in the second year of life. I've
posted information and references on my blog for the conveninece of
colleagues and parents. When you access the articles I've cited, you might
like to look at their reference lists, too. Go to www.virginithorley.com and
my blog is on the last page on the list.

Subject: Research needed

Hello wise ones,

I am presenting on a topic near and dear to my heart, how to support
breastfeeding duration. One of the topics I address is why we should care
and talk about the 2 aspects to "dose" of breastfeeding which contributes to
optimal health, both exclusivity AND duration.

I usually talk about the effects on mom, babe, society of supporting breast
feeding past 1 year. One of my favourite points which has a lot of impact
is the link between breast feeding and breast cancer reduction. I use the
Collaborative Group on Hormonal Factors in Breast Cancer (2002) published in
the Lancet as a reference to talk about the 4.3% decrease in the relative
risk of breast cancer for each year of breast feeding.

Here's my question:
Does anyone have a similar impactful piece of research highlighting the
importance of duration of breastfeeding for the child that they would be
willing to share?

Many thanks in advance.

Warmly,
Tina
