>>My question is this: I am trying to find a resource with protocols written
for metfomin usage for moms with PCOS experiencing very low milk production
(i.e. dosage). I have searched the archives and have found tidbits of info,
but nothing comprehensive. Ideally, I would like something referenced that I
can give to a patient's doctor. I am also interested in information on how
to determine which herbal galactogogues would be most appropriate based on
the mother's individual symptoms.<

There are no written protocols for metformin usage with PCOS because we are
still in the experimental/exploratory stage. The only "reference" that
exists so far is an abstract from a presentation to the Academy of
Breastfeeding Medicine last year by Mona Gabbay and Heather Kelly. They
reported on 9 cases of low milk supply where metformin was tried for low
milk supply, sometimes on its own, sometimes in conjunction with other
therapies. In regards to the "proper amount," I believe that it will
probably be close to whatever was a therapeutic level for the mother for her
PCOS problems in general. That can range anywhere from 500-2500mg daily.

Regarding choosing herbal galactogogues by mother's symptoms, this is
something that I've been working on (I call it targeting), but it really
doesn't exist yet. The best general reference on herbs and herbal
galactogogues is Sheila Humphrey's book.
