I had a mother come to my home to buy a baby sling and get some literature
about working and breastfeeding. I had seen a few days before at a meeting,
she had her baby at the breast the whole time she was there (about one hour)
but she left before I was able to talk with her one on one.
When she came to my home, she had just had a visit to WIC where she had an
appointment with the IBCLC there. She had also just seen her pediatrician a
day or two before this. Do you want to know the crazy thing? The baby, age
five weeks, had not reached her birthweight of 10 lbs. Apparently, the baby
was weighed at the ped but no one noticed (?) that baby was 10 lbs at birth
and 10 lbs at five weeks (10 lbs is not a bad weight for a five week old *if*
that baby was 7 lbs at birth!!) My role was to support the mother and
encourage her, while she and the IBCLCs (by now there were *two* helping her)
worked to *feed the baby*. ANother odd thing was that this baby did not
appear dehydrated! She was peeing, but *not* pooping- 2 weeks without poop!
Baby slept hours on end and mom thought she was just lucky. Baby nursed
enough to stay alive but not nearly enough to thrive. Baby actually had nice
skin color, even looked chubby BUT her little eyes just rolled around in her
head, and her head lolled from side to side. It certainly was a scary
situation for me, only being mentally prepared to sell this mom a sling but
then hit with this crisis :-( Luckily, in LLL we have lots of support and
plenty of resources.

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate-
