Have permission to post from parents .
Mother called frantic and crying that she has been unable to get the baby to latch for the past week. Baby girl, 7weeks old has haemangioma on the upper lip midline.Up until last Tuesday baby was going to the breast with some occasional difficulty. Has had some spit up after feedings parents say ony occasionally. Saw dermatolgist last tuesday and while having mouth examined started screamming mother attempted to brestfeed and baby fought at the breast however finnally started.
Since then the baby has started screaming at he breast , becomes stiff when you put her at the breast. Stiffen like a board and screams , becomes beet red. Baby has bee put on Propranolol this was done on Tuesday to shrink the heamangioma and the feeding diificulties have become worse. Mother is able to pump 6-8 oz. and is feeding the baby with a Dr. Brown bottle. It also takes awhile for the baby to accept the bottle into her mouth. Screams and fights then settles down, mother will burp her after every ounce because she has had some spit up . When this all strated baby would nurse at night ( thought because she is sleepy more relaxed) however now she will not do that.
Thought I could do some switching tried a little from the bottle to get the baby to calm down and the give ther breast no luck, then tried with the bottle and a nipple shield took it for a while about 3 minutes and then started screaming, stiffened and very unconsolable. Has tried side lying , laid back nursing neither worked, baby would latch the come off screamming.
Mother holds baby to chest ,rocks back and forth patting baby on the back or has baby in cradle hold rocking back and forth to calm the baby.
MOther is devastated, very upset ,baby doesn't want her, won't take her breast spends a lot of the day crying. Father has returned to work however the baby does calm down faster with the father than the mom.
Asked about mom's diet has made no changes, has cut down on comsumption of ice cream and milk thinking that mihgt be the answer, no new medication, spicey food or hot foods.
Spoke with pharmacy about the medication can cause stomach upset ,should be given on a full stomach, parent say do that .
Personal view baby acts like she has pain, stomach feels tight when she is stiff and screaming. Appears to be straining as though she is moving her bowels frequently however she passes no gas nor stool.Poor baby just seems so uncomfortable feel asleep on mom and then woke up grunting and crying.
Could she have some regurge, reflux,or some stomach problem. Advised mother to try the the warm bath and let the bab find her way to the breast if she would ,to keep pumping , take a break for a few days and then we could try getting the baby back to the breast. Also told them to call the Peds.
YOu can see it in the mother that she is SO VEry upset, the crying is so sad, I have seen kids get circ's and not cry as hard as this baby. I am worried about the mother , told her that any mothe rwould be upset and that her feellings were okay and she needs to get kthem out.
Any suggestions? Advice? ANyone in Australia who has seen this teatment or anyone here?
Thanks for being there !
