I am saddened of course by the conversation on Dr. Phil, but not
particularly surprised. In my experience, even breastfeeding "advocates"
such as La Leche League and IBCLCs are often distrusting of wet-nursing or
mother-to-mother milk sharing and it can even be considered unethical to
speak with mothers about the idea unless it is to talk about risks.

It would be quite useful if we had some real information on the subject.
What numbers of currently lactating women in developed countries have HIV?
How many of them are taking medication/ street drugs that are incompatible
with breastfeeding? My minimally informed impression is that if I where to
grab currently breastfeeding Jane Doe off the street of my town and hand her
my baby the risk would be virtually nil.

How can we expect a group who can barely tolerate the idea of a women
breastfeeding her own baby to accept that sharing of that experience/
substance when we can hardly do that ourselves as a group?
