Hello! I read with interest your post about the mom with 17 week old babe having problems. It sounds exactly like both of my children, to a tee. It was, in fact, a combination of dairy allergy and OAL with them. I ruthlessly eliminated all dairy (and derivatives) from my diet for over a year with each. It's interesting that you mentioned the reflux he suffers from as well. Both of my guys were diagnosed with reflux, but once we controlled the dairy with my older one, his reflux resolved. I later found out from the GI specialist at our Children's Hospital (CHOP in Philly) that reflux is often a symptom of diary allergy in newborns and infants. It seems that the stomach does anything it can to get rid of the offending proteins. Once the allergen is eliminated, the reflux seems to lessen or be eliminated and baby can stop taking the Zantac.

This mom might see good results with the elimination of dairy (but it must be all dairy and derivatives, not just avoiding milk and cheese). This essentially means all processed foods, since virtually all have sodium caseinate in them. Is mom feeding from both breasts at every feeding? From her response to you it seems as if she might, since she mentioned trying to stay on the same breast for a bit as a new possibility. I'd think she's have success with sticking to the same breast for 4 hours.

I'd like to know where mom read that dairy allergies usually manifest only in bloody stolls and skin problems. While I know they are common indicators, the green frothy poops, excessive gas, reflux, arching back and extreeme fussiness are also classic manifestations of dairy allergy. In any case, I would definitely encourage mom to continue to avoid ABM, becuase if the problem IS dairy, it will be severely compounded with the introduction of a mailk-based ABM.
