Jean,
I thank you for likening me to Rachel Carson. Her book, "Silent Spring," was
my 7th grade science project in 1963. Her book had just come out and I was
profoundly influenced by it.

If one person stands up and questions, that often gives others the courage to
stand up and question. Scientific thought, (political thought) needs the
freedom to ask the questions that no one asks. Experts are human, officials are
human. Error is a part of life, perfection dwells on someone else's planet.
We strive for perfection, but error has to be factored into our lifes, into
our professions, into our institutions.

Have you ever watched a rose bloom? It seems like one minute it is just a
bud and the next time you look the rose has fully blossomed. Change is like
watching a rose bud. First, the idea, and then suddenly the idea takes hold and
blossoms.

At a website by Jean Michael Cousteau, he quotes from Rachel Carson's book,
"The Sense of Wonder,"

"Those who dwell, as scientists or laymen, among the beauties and mysteries
of the Earth are never alone or weary of life."

Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC
