"don't offer, dont' refuse" is a weaning technique,
not just for nursing an older child. OTOH, it doesn't
always "work" to wean a child-

This may depend of the mother's view of how well this weaning technique
works. This technique of weaning a child over 1 year works quiet well with
respect to the child and the child's readiness to wean. Having know
thousands of children throughout the years who have been weaned with this
technique, I know few who have nursed past school age. And, those who were
of school age soon weaned due to peer association when they learn that others
their age do not nurse. But, I feel most using this technique weaned before
three.

If the mother wants the child weaned in her time without repect to the need
of the child, then she will have to use other techniques. I suggest she read
Kathleen Huggins book, "The Nursing Mother's Guide to Weaning." And, I
always tell her to be sure to read the first chapter, so she can make a more
informed choice about her situation.
