In a message dated 99-01-14 07:21:46 EST, you write:

<< you "have" to wear your nursing bra twenty-four hours a day because if you
don't, your breasts will sag! or at least that's why this advice is given
out.
and of course you wouldn't want anything gross like breastmilk leaking out in
 the bed, would you? >>

Well, for some folks the whole "food comes out of my boobs" business is still
pretty surreal, and those folks are likely to be more freaked out than, say, I
was, to find their bedsheets soaked every morning.

On the more empathic side, when I have had the misery of engorgement I wanted
something that was going to prevent ANY breast jiggling -- I was known to walk
around clutching both breasts in both hands, a la the Human Bra, because any
movement was so painful -- so I can understand those folks that are just plain
afraid to take that sucker off, day or night.

My usual advice is to say something like, "If engorgement is still making
jiggling painful it may help to wear a supportive bra for a while, as long as
it isn't cutting in to you more -- you probably want to avoid underwires for a
while. (And has your LC suggested anything for that engorgement? Is the
baby nursing a lot? etc etc) On the other hand, getting naked will make it
easier to get the baby in there an draining those breast, not to mention
snuggling, so don't get dogmatic about it one way or the other."

This last is the key thing I think -- that moms need to think about what makes
them comfortable, not just about sticking to some theoretical best one size
fits all solution.
