Every mother has her own comfort level regarding exposure. Some moms really
don't care if strangers see their breasts, some of us do. Shouldn't our
choices be respected? In fact, isn't it great that moms who do feel
uncomfortable about exposing themselves still get out there and NIP, even if
they cover themselves with a blanket?

I have never used a blanket, but I do cover my breast as much as possible
with my shirt when nursing in public. My first priority is always my baby's
comfort--if I get exposed in the process of taking care of him, so be it. I
accept that as a parent, I will have to do things that make me uncomfortable
at times, but just as I do what I can to avoid being spit up on, I do what I
can to prevent strangers from looking at my breasts. I'm not ashamed of
breastfeeding (and indeed, when a store manager tried to shame me for a
moment of "indiscretion," I stood up for myself:
http://reluctantlactivist.blogspot.com/2006/04/wtf.html and then co-founded
an organization to support moms who want to become more comfortable NIP).

Instead of telling moms they should ignore their own comfort, let's work to
educate those with wrongheaded notions about breastfeeding.
