Hi Lactnet-casters,
I am Diane Dressler, a LLL Leader in Vermont. I am a regular
subscriber, but am mostly "nomail" and that's why you never hear from
me. I can't resist sending a message to all about a lovely little
magazine article. My eleven year old son showed it to me. Those of you
developing breastfeeding education curricula for elementary school would
be interested to check out the May issue of Ranger Rick magazine which
contains a nice article called "Mother's Magic" by Kathleen Almy, all
about mother's milk--facts about different animals species' milk,
anatomy, and the anti-infective properties of mother's milk. The
article also says, "Nursing moms also may get their share of good
feelings. As a baby sucks on a teat, signals travel to the mother's
brain. These signals tell the brain to make special chemicals. The
chemicals help the mother feel relaxed--and better able to put up with
her demanding babies!" Try not to be disappointed about the article not
containing a photo of a nursing human mom, however we must appreciate
that the kids who read the article probably will take time to ponder the
provocative message that "we are all mammals, the only animals on Earth
that drink milk from their mothers."
Happy spring, Diane
