Just interested to know what fellow Hospital Based IBCLCs are seeing in terms of percentage of incidence of Tongue Ties in your patient population. Here where I work my co workers and I estimate we see between 20 to 30 % of our Infants with Tongue Ties, that includes Anterior and Posterior. We have about 300 deliveries a month, and a 30 Bed Level 3 NICU. This seems high to us, and the literature only supports a 7 to 10 % incidence. We are receiving flack from some of our Peds MD's for diagnosing so many. In so many of these women, even after I have facilitated a deeper latch, i.e. using the Australian position, suck training, nipple shield and Baby led self attachment, the Moms still have painful, pinched nipples, and when I look sure enough, there is usually a Tongue Tie present.
