Dorothy asked "
<< Does anyone have any information on the oral and speech development of
children who have never "sucked" from the breast or bottle, ie. that have
been cup fed instead (as in the second case mentioned above).>>

Whe I was 18, my little brother was born with cleft lip & palate (1973). My
mom was not into breastfeeding but my brother was not able to bottle feed
either. they did not have the obturators that are used now. My brother was
cup fed from birth, and once they did the initial surgery, my mom decided to
continue with the cup so she would not have to wean him from bottles later
on!!!! He has minimal speech problems that are felt to be related to the
palate problems, but developmentally never any problems (he has a great job
with A. Anderson Consulting now!!!).

It was interesting in that I learned to cup feed way before we started doing
it as LCs!!!
