As I was leaving work today, something happened that I wanted to share with
the list. A mother came in to the "recovery hotel" where I work, and
everyone made a big tumult over her. Not because it was her 16th child she
was recovering from, but because she is 50 years old. She right away put a
sign on the crib "bottlefeeding", and the nurse asked her if she wanted my
help. She laughed and said "after all my exerience!" She then proceeded
to tell the nurses that she has no milk, one baby she almost starved at 2
months because she thought she had milk, her mother told her that in Europe
her grandmother said she did not have milk, etc. I am only half listening,
because I hear this same story all the time. I was not going to go into my
whole pitch if she was not interested. But then she tells me that she does
get engorged, and sometimes milk sprays, but it is never enough. The
nurses convince her to let me see how she is feeding. I go to her room
with her, and observe the worst positioning and latch I have almost ever
seen, and she says see, I latch the baby on perfectly. So I showed her
what a real latch is, explained the reason why she probably had no milk for
the past 15 kids, and left with the baby sucking vigorously. She is at day
3 after birth and has not done any stimulation by pump or baby until that
point. I laughed with her, "Wouldn't it be funny if this baby you fully
breastfed?!" I don't have high hopes just because she does seem very worn
out, and I highly doubt she will put much effort into it, but imagine that
- Never latching a baby on correctly, and having 15 times to have someone
give you proper information and help. Truly Unbelievable. I will keep you
all posted on what happens.
