I'm stumped. A mother of a 14 week old called me today. Having problems with
baby nursing for 2 minutes, then backing off and screaming, nursing 2
minutes, then backing off & screaming,.... This continues throughout the
feeding which lasts about 10 minutes. This has been going on for several
weeks. No thrush seen. Don't think it is an overactive MER. Baby gaining
weight, so production is good. Was seen by doctor, has no nasal stuffiness,
etc., etc. Has been diagnosed with reflux and is on medication, so thought
it might be soreness of esophagus from reflux. Here's the confusing part.
DOES NOT HAPPEN DURING NIGHTTIME FEEDS. Also doesn't happen when formula
feeding a bottle. Mom has cut out dairy products (which I really don't think
it's related to food.) Sounds to me like it might be something positional,
maybe something hurts him in a certain position. Usually sidelying at night
when breastfeeding and cradle during day. Suggested trying sidelying during
day to see if makes a difference. Any other ideas?
