Rob, sounds to me like that baby's getting really hungry, and needs to eat!
Sounds like one of those those hungry, fretful babies that haven't figured
out exactly what to do yet. In my experience, they tend to lose "stamina" or
whatever you'd call it. Remember Rule #1: feed the baby!

IF the mom was wanting to breastfeed (say again, IF...), I'd get that mom
pumping, and I'd praise whatever amount she got to the highest heavens, and
I'd get it into the baby ASAP. I'm sure whoever's working with her has tried
"the usuals", but at 48 hrs.+, the priority is most likely to just get a
little fuel in the kid so s/he has enough energy to persist in learning at
breast. Finger-feed maybe - to be totally honest, I might just go for EBM in
a plain old bottle. In my HO, these babies often aren't able to really learn
much about how to nurse till they've had a good feed or two.

These hungry but "unskilled" nursers don't know what the problem is and they
don't have any experience of how to fix it yet - they just know that they
don't feel right, but haven't had the chance to put mouth, breast, mama,
tummy, and comfort together yet.

I'd reassure mom that it's not too late for BFing, even if she's "switched"
to formula; she may change her mind once she & the baby have had a few hours
of sleep. She needs to know that IF (again, IF...) she does want to nurse,
she hasn't spoiled her opportunity!
