What a story, and she delivered vaginally and everything was fine. The
article doesn't include all the medical details, but how can one make a
sure diagnosis of shoulder dystocia before the mother is well along in
labor, if not pushing the head out.

When I teach about birth, I try to be very clear that no matter how we
look at the baby inside from the outside, it is an imprecise measure.
When people have ultrasounds, they should always ask what are the error
bars of the results. The baby weighs 7 lb 2 ozs + or - how much? The
due date is Jan 30 + or - what? For some people that is the first time
they hear that the ultrasound isn't precise. The same is true of bfing.
No matter how hard we try, we can't measure exactly how much the baby
takes in at each nursing. There are always error bars.

Similar scenarios have arisen around bfing in the US. There have been
several cases in several states of HIV+ Moms being told that if they
nurse the Dept of Social Services will take the baby away. Has this
arisen in other countries?
