<Recently a patient told me that an LC instructed her to wake her full term,
healthy newborn every 3 hrs at night to feed her. I have always told my
patients that if the baby is feeding well during the day, there was no need
to wake her at night. Is there a need to wake a baby at night who is feeding
well during the day?>

I often discuss "feeding according to need". This may be the baby's need (to
feed) or the mother's need (to have milk removed). If a woman has had
mastitis she may need to be careful about not allowing her breasts to get
too full, so I may suggest waking the baby. This would be after 4, 5 or 6
hours - not 3 hours.
