My friend was induced the day of her due date because she had gestational
diabetes (I am questioning that because he was only 7 lbs.). She was not
dilated at the time of induction. They gave her Cervadil and Pitocin. She
pushed for 1.5 hours when she was not fully dilated. Then the OB suggested
a C-section.

They strted her epidural for the second time and when she was on the table,
the medication went to high and she could not breathe and passed out. They
got her to breate with oxygen but were ready to intubate. Sorry for sounding
so dramatic, this was the version I got from her husband who was in the room
and was traumatized by the whole thing.

She was in recovery for 6 hours without the baby. They asked her to nurse
at 4:00 am and she declined. She felt too groggy and was not comfortable
nursing, maybe from all the meds in her system.

They used a syringe and formula to feed the baby that night. She tried
nursing him but he would not stay awake despite trying the tips to wake a
sleepy newborn. I figured that was typical for her birth, but suggested she
keep trying and do a lot of skin to skin contact.

She was tired and sent the baby to the nursery the first night. The next
night I told her husband to keep the baby in the room and have her nurse
every 2 hours to get back on track with her milk coming in. Baby was starting
to get jaundiced and lost 7 oz. from his birth weight. They estimated he was
nursing every 3 to 3.5 hours.

I explained that by the time the nurses brought them the baby, he was crying,
late sign of hunger. These are the early signes of hunger, etc.

The next day they said he was extremely fussy and the nurses took him. He
had a fever and infection. They were not sure if it was from Group B Strep.
Mom was released from the hospital on Sunday but baby had to stay in the
NICU to get ABX. The hospital gave her a pump and she expressed breast milk
and took it to the hospital. The hospital fed him with the syringe and EBM
when she was not there.

When baby came home on Monday, they got him to latch. She went to see
the LC at the hospital for a follow up. She was too engorged for him to latch
on and she has flat nipples. I beleive she is using a nipple shield. The LC said
to feed him every 3 hours. Before 3 he just plays and after 3 he gets too
upset. Yeah, well, he is starving. :(

I am just overwhelmed. Trying to be a good friend across state lines, and
give her breastfeeding support. When she told me about the Karo syrup, I
really had to hold me tongue, trying not to overstep my boundaries.

Thank you for your advice. I suggested that she find an IBCLC.
