Hi all. This is the welcome message that will be sent to all new subscribers
to Lactnet. Please save this message. I apologize for its length, but it has
important information that you will need.

Kathleen Bruce

Welcome to Lactnet, an informational discussion group for lactation
consultants and others interested in lactation consulting and
breastfeeding. You have now been added to LACTNET by Norm Aleks
<[log in to unmask]>, the UMMED systems staff member. The owners of
Lactnet are Kathleen B. Bruce BSN, IBCLC <[log in to unmask]> and Kathleen
G. Auerbach Ph.D, IBCLC. PLEASE SAVE THIS MESSAGE. You may find it helpful
to navigate within Lactnet.

This message contains basic LISTSERV commands. This might look like a waste
of disk space now, but months from now,, you will be glad you have it when
you realize that you cannot remember the commands.

To SEND A MESSAGE TO ALL PEOPLE CURRENTLY SUBSCRIBED TO LACTNET:
send mail to [log in to unmask] This is "sending mail to the list."
You send mail to a single address and LISTSERV makes copies for all
subscribers to LACTNET. NEVER send a command to this address as it would be
distributed to all the people who have subscribed, and would be considered
annoying if done on a regular basis.

ALL COMMANDS must be sent to the LISTSERV ADDRESS which is
[log in to unmask] It is very important that you understand the
difference between the two. The LISTSERV address is like a fax number, and
the list address is like a normal phone line. If you send a command to the
list address, nothing happens, except that everyone sees your command as a
message. If you send a chatty message to the computer (listserv address),
the computer doesn't know what to do with this information.

You can LEAVE THE LIST at any time by sending a SIGNOFF LACTNET command to
the [log in to unmask] address. You can also tell LISTSERV how you
want it to confirm the recept of messages you send to the list.

Send the following commands to [log in to unmask] for the following
results:

SIGNOFF LACTNET Removes you from LACTNET mailing list
SET LACTNET REPRO Tells Listserv to send you a copy of your own messages.
SET LACTNET ACT NOREPRO Tells Listserv to mail you a short acknowledgement
of your message to the listserv.
SET LACTNET NOACK NOREPRO Turn off acknowledgements completely
SET LACTNET NOMAIL Turns off your mail temporarily
SET LACTNET MAIL Turns your mail back on.

If you go away for a vacation, PLEASE SET LACTNET NOMAIL. Otherwise, your
mailbox will fill up, and you will most likely be removed from LACTNET due
to error messages that will be generated by your full mailbox. When you
return, SET LACTNET MAIL.

Contributions to LACTNET are automatically archived. You can get a list of
available archive files by sending an INDEX LACTNET command to
[log in to unmask] You can then order these files with a GET
LACTNET LOGxxxx command or using LISTSERV's database search facilities. Send
an INFO DATABASE command for more information on the latter.

Please note that it is presently possible for anybody to determine that you
are signed up to the list through the use of the REVIEW LACTNET command,
which returns the email address and name of all subscribers. If you do not
want your name to be visible, issue a SET LACTNET CONCEAL command.

More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the LISTSERV reference
card, which you can retrieve by sending an INFO REFCARD command to
[log in to unmask]

RULES OF THE ROAD FOR LACTNET:
PURPOSE OF LACTNET: For Lactation Consultants and others who assist
breastfeeding mothers and their babies to share concerns, information, hints
for helping mothers.

REMEMBER: What you write should be something that you would be willing to
see printed on the front page of the NY TIMES. If you mention a client's or
a colleague's name, please get permission from them in advance. If you wish
to avoid embarassment, antagonism, legal redress, and similar
unpleasantness, be careful about what you say and about whom/what!

Lactnat is a small LISTSERV with limited capabilities. If it is misused (see
below) we will lose our privilege of existence as a FREE listserv. To avoid
this, please observe the guidelines listed below.

DO's:
a. share concerns about cases
b. share suggestions for solving problems you have encountered
c. support the work efforts of other LCs and related professionals

DONT'S:
a. bad mouth other LCs or other professionals, no matter how high your level
of aggravation (this has legal implications for the person making the
statement as well as for LACTNET and all recipients of such a message.
b. talk up commercial products by brand name obtainable at a profit to
those who distribute same (this is not an infomercial outlet).
c. bad mouth commercial products by brand name ( again, this has legal
implications).
d. talk nasty about other groups than your own (once again, see above). If
you feel the need to express negativity, do it though email. REMEMBER,
members of Lactnet come from all places, walks of life, and have different
affiliations.
e. Scan pictures of any size. Please do this through email. Large files can
cause Lactnet to BOMB, and may cause us to lose the good graces of our host.
f. use LACTNET as a resource for mothers needing assistance. LACTNET is NOT
FOR MOTHER TO MOTHER SUPPORT. It IS for LC to LC support, or Nurse to LC
support, or WIC person to LLL Leader support.etc. If you have clients who
need on line assistance with bf, and you refer them to LACTNET for help, you
risk being removed from the list. Please feel free to refer clients needing
help to appropriate sources of help.

POLICY CONCERNING REMOVAL FROM LACTNET:
The administrators reserve the right to remove individuals from this list
under extraordinary circumstances. It is difficult to anticipate every
reason why someon might be removed from the lists; in general, behavior
which is substantially disruptive to the list and which is known by the
perpetrator to be inappropriate may lead to removal. An individual who is
removed from the lists will be notified of the removal by administrators. if
he or she wishes to appeal the removal, a poll will be taken of the current
membership of the faq-maintainers list. If 10% or more of the current
membership supports reinstatement, the individual will be returned to the list.

Any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Yours ,

Kathleen Bruce RN, BSN, IBCLC [log in to unmask]
