I suggest herbs frequently. Mostly to increase the supply, sometimes even
if the supply is good, because a baby who is not latching on may latch on
better if the flow rate is faster. I have probably had several hundred
women using fenugreek and/or blessed thistle for increasing milk production.
It seems to work, especially if used early in lactation (first few weeks,
but 10 days even better).

The dose I suggest is:

fenugreek 3 capsules 3 times a day (capsules vary from 400-700 mg, but
that's fenugreek--who knows what the active ingredient is?)

plus

blessed thistle same dose. I find that fenugreek seems to work better, but
the two work better than one alone. If the mother balks at taking so many
capsules, I suggest fenugreek alone.

I have not seen or heard of any serious side effects. Cramping and diarrhea
are supposed to occur with large doses of fenugreek, but I have not seen it,
except in one mother, but then her whole family got gastro, so that wasn't
it. Some of the mothers do not like the smell of fenugreek, but it smells
like curry, and comes out in their pores, and I think they smell delicious.
