Happy Thanksgiving to those celebrating this holiday. My experience with
cabbage leaves is that it is not merely a psychological response. I have
even had my more skeptical moms use it on only one breast (I have many
engineers and health care professionals in my past and present patients);
they were and are astounded at the results.

There was a company several years back that tried to isolate the components
of the cabbage that was responsible for the reduction in
swelling/edema/interstitial fluid but was unsuccessful so instead they just
used the entire leaf in their product. This product was then marketed to
LCs to be used for moms wanted to dry up and for engorged moms. I don't
remember the name of the product because I grow my own organic cabbage and
give it to moms for free so that I know exactly what is going into the
cabbage (including the well heated compost used to fertilize it). If
someone knows the name of the company, I bet they have a very long
bibliography to give you.

Many have scoffed at cabbage leaves...all I know is that they work. I have
a doctorate from a top notch institution (UCLA) and completed a Pew-Memorial
Trust Health Policy post-doc in evidence-based outcomes health services
research so I am well aware of the need to back up our practice with
research, but at 2am when a mom is in pain and a baby can't latch on because
of a series of lactation mismanagement errors...I'll reach for those cabbage
leaves without a long list of references any day!
