Pedal pumps, well I don't think the WIC moms I work with will use them.
Plus, isn't the old Medela stick or piston manual not very effective? I
think the pedal pumps would be seen as too difficult. That is what my
clients say about the manual pump but then later they will say this
about the electric hospital quality pumps, too ("I am just too busy to
pump" or "its too hard").

Most hospitals around here push moms to borrow a free electric pump from
WIC for the NICU babies but they will not help a mom breastfeed. The
babies come home having never nursed or tried just one time in the
hospital (for a premie). Probably 90% of my clients refuse IBCLC help
from WIC once baby is discharged. They feel that formula is just easier.
I think this is because mom is too intimidated to breastfeed at home if
the culture in the NICU was bottle feeding. She has not been sold how
important breastfeeding is, rather was shown formula as the norm. And
the formula is free so this is very enticing.
