I recently attended a pediatric conference which included a pediatric dentist
as a speaker. His belief was that fluoride had mainly a topical effect and was
not really needed until the teeth were coming in.
The present recommendation for fluoride is not to start it until at least 6
months. In addition with all the unquanitified sourfces of fluoride in soft
drinks and juices made from fluoridated water supplies, I am getting reluctant
to start my patients on fluoride without having the family thouroughly check
their fluoride intake.
I doubt that the claims of cavity protection with prenatal fluoride are true,
and I've also seen studies to the contrary. I would be worried about toxicity.
