First of all, thank you to everyone who responded to me.
I saw the baby for followup today, now 9 days old. He is exclusively
breastfed from both breasts, and has gained 6 oz over his birth weight.
Mom denies any discomfort, plugging, unusual engorgement on the side with
the bullet. Before the baby left the well baby nursery, I obtained a blood
lead level on him, and it was 0.9 micro/dl, which is very, very low, for
those of you who don't follow lead levels regularly. So at least while in
utero, he didn't get exposed.
I talked to a trauma surgeon who told me that bullets are usually a mixture
of metals, that patients commonly will have bullet debris left in them, and
that they rarely get poisoned by this.
So, I suppose I could send the milk for analysis, but I don't like to do
unnecessary testing, so I'll have to think about it.
Now all I have to do is convince the mom to keep nursing after she goes
back to high school in February.
I'm still "nomail" if you'd like to respond.
