Dear Ann
The Code has nothing to say about the development, sale or use of
breastpumps or infant feeding devices. It has nothing to say about mothers
of premature infants using breastpumps or feeding their babies expressed
breast milk with a bottle. There is nothing whatever in any document that I
have ever seen suggesting that mothers should not have access to either
breastpumps or infant feeding devices.
The Code is concerned with marketing to the general public, mothers and
health professionals that promotes the use of these products because this
sort of marketing creates the impression that EVERY mother NEEDS to use
artificial feeding devices that can interfere with the establishment and
maintenance of infant feeding at the breast.
I hope this clears up the issue for you. If it does not, I will presenting
an evidence based defence of Code Compliance at ILCA's annual conference in
July. I would be more than happy to answer any of your questions in San
Antonio.
