Forwarding a note from the LC looking for info on MRSA - Please respond to

Thank you all for assist on this topic. Most research and articles in
journals remain vague on management of the Breastfeeding mother and baby
that mother has had positive MRSA found in bilat breastmilk cultures.
Current client has been pumping and dumping her milk for 18 days now. On
Vanc in hosp, home on Augmenten after failed first round of Dicloxicillin
prior to hosp admit. Baby has not shown any signs of illness thus far. She
still wants to resume breastfeeding. Physicians say No !! not until she has
negative cultures. Again she has no abscess and no longer has Masititis,
but milk cultured MRSA.
MRSA as you know is all over the news. So how do I (all LC's) proceed with
this scenario?. The Physician would actually like her to "give up the
thought of breastfeeding". She comes to me stating tearfully she wants to
continue. The Pediatrician is ok with her resuming, but after negative
cultures are found. How long will it remain in her system? Will it ever go
away or does it just hide and rear its ugly head with the next breast
"event" (clogged duct, repeat mastitis, ductile yeast, weaning)?
Is her baby at risk? That phrase Super Bug, is scaring alot of Mothers with
mastitis. They may resort to Formula as a "safer choice". Makes me sad.
Any feed back will be very, very appreciated. Carla Bolen-Hebert IBCLC
