What I took away from Suzanne Colson's talk at Tufts was that no specific
position was the best position. Woman try to accommodate their breastfeeding
pillows or are told to sit straight up in a chair, which is not always
comfortable right after birth and soon thereafter. I've had moms either lay on
the floor with a pillow (also use this for postural feeding) or on the couch
with their heads resting on the arm rest. The couch seems like the most
practical position for mother's at home. This way they can rest while baby
eats. Sometimes I'll start with them sitting up and then turn them both onto the
couch and help them to settle in and relax.
