I find the volume that can be expressed very variable. Last week a mother
expressed colostrum on day one that streamed across the room at the very
first attempt at hand expression. Her baby was skin-to-skin at the time but
not interested in feeding. Other times there is just a drop or two. Most
commonly we see about 2 to 7mls in the first few hours after birth. But I
have observed/heard babies swallow at the breast after a few minutes of
suckling and firmly believe that what can be expressed in no way correlates
to the volume available to an efficiently suckling newborn.
