Susan, I couldn't disagree with you more. These are such big issues
regarding everything from method to the seemingly innocent question of
"What harm will one formula feed do?" I think all of us on Lactnet could
go ballistic over certain aspects of this. I do agree that communication
would be the ultimate way to solve much of this, but as noted in one
post, documentation on charts doesn't always match the actual situation.
I, for one, will continue to advocate for the mom & baby, unfortunately
over being an advocate for the nurse. Mind you, I have many friends in
the nursing profession & would never want to see them hurt, yet,
progressing to an all out confrontation to get "your" way because the
staff won't cooperate isn't solving anything either. In our area, we
have had nurses & peds call Child Protective Services if moms won't
cooperate regarding feeding instructions "the baby MUST be fed formula,
because......you name it (baby too big at birth, baby will dehydrate,
etc) , yet why can't we call in the lawyers when they won't cooperate.
Unfortunately, this is why we have progressed into a sue-happy country.
