I would first continue bf and reassure mother. However, (and especially if
she is pumping due to premature birth) I think it would be
important, interesting and informative to culture the colostrum, as *some"
colors in breastmilk are associated with bacterial infection. It could be a
variant on rusty pipe syndrome, since mother is pumping and it's in the
first days postpartum. It would also be interesting and informative to view
this colostrum under a microscope (in the lab or in a family practice or
gyn office, which often have these), perhaps compared to a sample of
*normal color* colostrum, and see if there is a pronounced difference. If
those simple tests were done, the results would make an excellent case
study to be published and add to our collective knowledge base. Perhaps her
doctor would want to write it up with you and could get a photo for
educational consent.
