Lactnetters,
I'm a little late and haven't read all of the "Cutting Syringes" segments,
but thought I'd share. I've found the perfect solution to the cutting of
the syringes! I was at HomeDepot one night on another errand and found a
pipe cutter. I know that someone mentioned the possibility, wasn't clear if
she had tried it. It works. I pull the plunger out just an inch or so,
then apply the pipe cutter, blade side up and give a little pressure, and
twist the syringe gently. It cuts through well and can make a smooth cut
edge. Then I pull the plunger out and replace it 'backwards' in the
syringe. Sometimes the syringe cracks and I have to go back over the other
direction to smooth it out. It's a cinch and quick. The cutter costs about
$14 at HOme Depot. I carry it on my cart and the nurses can make their own
if I'm not here. I use a 20cc syringe to give enough space around the
nipple not to cause pain. I also and careful to have mom do this herself,
so no injury is inflicted. The nurses thought I was barbaric to start with
and were very worried that we'd inflict trauma to the breast. I found that
mom's know when the pull is 'just right'.
It's so much better than using a scalpel and almost, if not, cutting off
your finger.
