I just wanted to mention that I know of two police officers who nursed
while on duty. One of them came to the breastfeeding support group I ran
at Long Island College Hospital. She was completely inspired by the other
officer who pumped everywhere. She had a pump that she plugged into her
patrol car and would regularly pump while on duty. The officer who
attended support group followed suit. Apparently the NYPD has no such
worries about lead dust.

As for the lead, it seems to me that merely putting the bullets into the
gun would create little dust and that one would hope that an active police
officer would not be firing her gun as frequently as on the firing range.
Moreover, it seems to me that using a mask that prevents inhalation of lead
dust and a good shower after being on the firing range would take care of
the lead dust exposure if the officers are required to spend a certain
amount of time on the firing range. Finally, a good iron status helps to
prevent absorption of lead.

I wish I had the phone numbers of those two officers so I could ask them if
they ever had their blood tested for lead.

Best, Susan Burger
