A simpler way that has been working for me personally, my family
(especially when a son ran track and needed my treated towels from home
to avoid hives) and the many mothers and babes I've share the hint with:

A second rinse with 1/2 cup white (distilled) vinegar in it. Absolutely
no softener in washer or dryer. Smell goes away, whether a dryer or
line-drying is used.

I also remember a breastfed grandson (21 years old recently) who broke
out in a very horrendous raw diaper rash when a certain discount store
brand of disposables was used, but not when in any of the leading brands.
