We did some library displays for World Breastfeeding Week last year. It
was a lot of work, and the various branch libraries were quite different in
how much they supported or undermined the displays. I found it actually
easier to work with local bookstores. One bookstore did a whole window
display with posters (I supplied the ones available from LLL Canada about
breastfeeding "anytime, anywhere", and the WBW one from the Learning Curve,
1-800-795-9295). Two bookstores put out special displays of the
breastfeeding books I recommended, both children's and adults'. For
bookstores and libraries both, we made bookmarks on pastel-colored stiff
paper. On one side we listed all the local breastfeeding classes. On the
other side we put all the breastfeeding helpline phone numbers, including
those for the hospitals, HMOs, city and county public health departments,
LLL, and private LC. Ours is a city of 192,000. You would have to modify
these ideas to fit the size and needs of your own areas. I made up a one
page, double sided handout of children's books that have positive images of
breastfeeding. We also had a handout describing the Innocenti Declaration
and the origin of World Breastfeeding Week, as well as lists of helpful
resource books on breastfeeding for adults. A lot of work, and I'm not
sure if it had much impact. It was hard to measure, because we couldn't
monitor all the libraries all the time. We had tried to cover 27 branches.

If you have questions, e-mail me privately at

as I will be going no mail for one week. I'll try to catch up with Lactnet
as I can when I return.
